It increasingly becomes clear that building an app was never about changing the world or improving people’s lives, but about about harvesting and selling users’ data. Even advertisement involves selling data to better target behaviors. As we continue to define “currency” in the future, it seems reasonable and practical that we are the owners of the our personal data. Private information should include your online activity and the websites your visit should not be able to profit off of your information without your consent and compensation. There is often little understanding or third party due diligence done when applications or websites sell your data, cookies, imagines, etc.
Firstly, there should be even further transparency regarding data, due diligence on whether there is malicious purposes for the data collection, approval process for relevant buyers, and compensation for sellers of their own data.
It feels nearly impossible, but data storage and usage needs to be regulated better.
