individualized learning.
I got this idea originally during the pandemic. A lot of my friends are educators and I saw how difficult it was for both students and teachers to navigate this new virtual learning environment. The most vulnerable children were at risk of falling behind. I, myself, grew up without reliable internet so I can imagine the stress on parents during these times.
Let’s consider an online application fit for remote learning from a tablet. It uses machine learning to identify strengths and weaknesses of the student and builds a profile. The algorithm will display the curriculum that suits the student’s unique learning style whether that is visual, auditory, verbal, physical, or logical and builds upon the material to enhance retention.
“Everyone is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid.”
My inspiration for this idea derives from my own struggle with formal education. I have dyslexia and the current educational system is often unforgiving and less than inclusive for those of us with learning differences. Over time I have found that I work best with a combination of styles that is both auditory and visual.
The big idea within this little idea is that there is no failure in learning, but rather an adjustment to the method so that we do not just constantly race to the next chapter without the fundamental building blocks. I could see partnerships with high tech for tablets/resources, governments to develop universal curriculum, and alternative learning aids to provide science, robotics, and computing kits.
Is this the future of learning?
